The far, far outer reaches of the East Bay

You won't like Oakland, trust me

Livermore, Dublin, Pleasant Hill would be good places to start looking.

I was about to say Alameda until I caught your screen name. Religion isn't really big here in Alameda and those that do go are typically not conservative. The outer eastbay would be your best bet and it's warmer.

Hey, that NOBE area (Berkeley/Oakland/Emeryville) has places for that price! Why not send him over there?

Marin City, no joke.

This place gets such a bad rap but its honestly one of the safest places I've ever lived. I mean c'mon its in MARIN.

Easy access to SF with Golden Gate Transit, beautiful views, trails, etc. Whats not to love?

I've never heard of Marin City. Now I'll have to look it up.

Marin City is officially the most southern edge of Sausalito, with Sausalito name and zip code.

Generally goes by Marin City. Its also one of the only parts of Marin County with any public housing to speak of so it gets a bad rap. Just stay away from the public housing side of Drake avenue and its a lovely place to live.

Marin is easily one of the most awesome places to live in Bay Area imo, and its surprisingly affordable in certain areas. Doesn't have BART though. I take the commuter bus.

You are all way off on the price. This is a bear market for real estate. The OP said 1000-1200 ft2 (that's a tiny house) for $600-700K. He does not have to live in crappy Marin City or a farflung part of the East Bay. This price range very doable in "Lamorinda," i.e. Lafayette, Moraga, Orinda, which is the heart of the East Bay and the best address there. It is also the most conservative part of the Bay Area (40-45% Republican, still not a majority).

Here's a sample, much larger than the OP needs. It's kind of dated, doesn't look like much from the outside, but the inside is nice:

19 Monte Vista Rd
Orinda, CA 94563
For Sale $630,000
Beds: 3
Baths: 3
Sqft: 1,760
Lot: 9,799 sq ft / 0.22 acres
Type: Single Family
Year built: 1958
Parking: Carport
Cooling: --
Heating: Forced air
Fireplace: Yes
On Zillow: 32 days
MLS #: 40592121
Charming 2 story bungalow w/3 bedrooms 3 baths, hardwd floors, updated kitchen, decks, views, and covered 2 car carport needs some TLC but could be darling! Living area has open flr plan with lots of light. Quiet neighborhood. Near Wagner Ranch Elementary Schl, BART, dowtown Orinda,
highway 24.

Also, my old house, a 2 bedroom on El Toyonal in Orinda, one of the oldest and best parts of Orinda with dramatic views, recently sold for $520,000. It's listed incorrectly on Zillow as 765 ft2, but that is just the main floor. The second floor (downstairs, but it's an above-ground hillside floor, not a basement) is about as large, for a total of about 1400 ft2, and is a very attractive house in good shape.
