bmw335xi, do you know if Exxex condos have a website? I couldn't find one using a Google search. Are they still for sale?

Resale by now. They sold in around 2005 or so.

I was also going to recommend the Essex. Although the Ellington has much more generous features in terms of amenities and finishes (even ceiling heights), the Essex has a fabulous pool with a view of Lake Merritt, and many condos have lake views. Plus, it's more walkable and there is no train noise.

Isn't the area around the Ellington still a dump? Or are they doing anything to get in nice new businesses?

This is new.

Nido Oakland

It is getting better over there, but it is a strangely transitional block.

The Jack London Square area has Blue Bottle Coffee, Chop Bar restaurant/bar, Haven restaurant, Everett & Jones sit down barbeque restaurant, Beer Revolution craft beer bar and more. There's also a free shuttle bus from there into Downtown and Uptown Oakland, and a ferry to San Francisco. There certainly could be more happening, but there's very little bad stuff, and lots of good stuff.

JLS neighborhood is really disconnected from itself and the rest of downtown. All that stuff is great, but the walk from the Ellington to Chop Bar isn't really that great. And that stretch of Broadway has had a lot of trouble over the past 5ish years in filling those huge club/bar spots.

Don't forget Yoshi's, the Regal Cinema and the US Potomac tours. IMO JLS was better when the waterfront area was actually busy though and it actually functioned like a tourist area (i.e. back when the Barnes and Nobles was still there). The nightlife is cool but in the daytime it's dead for the most part other than when Eat Real's in town.

the area right around the ellington still has the produce companies (think about those early morning delivery trucks waking you up at 4:00 in the morning) but i think the city is trying to relocate them

JLs kicked out the Family casual dining restaurants like TGIF for example and brought in higher class places like HAVEN, boca nova and a soon to open artisan pizza place The Forge( from the kuleto group)
