I used to be the typical smug San Franciscan type (as yourself) until I visited NYC and was humbled.

That sad thing is many in SF think that they are cosmopolitan. But I think they do not travel so much. NY offers so much more as far as culture, sophistication and style.

I've lived in NY my whole life...all 57 years of it.
Lived in the Bay area for a short time years ago. My daughter and her family live in S.F.
Start with visiting the parks. Central Park vs Golden Gate...hands down CP is the most exciting!!
The weather? Well...depends what floats yer boat. I think SF has nicer weather but I love the 4 seasons here in NY and with global warming the weather has gotten even a bit nicer...hmmm....and lets not forget that we don't get earthquakes.
It is true though that the terrorists consider NY the most important place on the planet...fwtw : (
Soul? Hands down NY from uptown to downtown. There's no place on this entire planet that has the diversity and soul NYC has.

You people are right. NYC blows SF out of the water. For example, I thought San Franciscans were vain braggarts, but NYC has them clearly beat there. Good job flapping your gums, Least Coasters.

I don't have a bias towards either SF or NY. I grew up in Kansas City. But many people in SF are super vain and have a inflated sense of self importance. Almost to a point of being delusional. People from NY seem more down to earth and grounded in reality.

And it is not a thing about East and West Coast. SF people are very different than others on the West Coast.

NYC is not the same without its Twin Towers. The towers set off the skyline and made nyc what is. I feel bad for all New Yorkers and hope that some day your will city shine again.

I think it is a combination. When people talk about nyc they often talk about the seasons, Central Park, etc. Without its Twin Towers nyc has lost its identity as well as its reputation as a world class city.

The Park is all about the people...take a walk in it any season of the year and you'll see what I mean.
I was walking the streets long b/4 the twin towers were even an idea in anyone's mind and the city was the same...loaded with soul from the Lower East side where I was born all the way up through HArlem.
It's the people...The twin towers and all the "buildings" are more the tourist destinations...the people in NY work IN them but they are not THEM...they are inanimate objects that merely house us.

The loss of the Twin Towers also represents the events of 9/11. After those devastating attacks the people of nyc had a chance to come together and rebuild their city. Instead they chose to exploit the events of 9/11 for personal and politcal gain. NYC lost its skyline on 9/11 but it also lost its soul.
