Newark's Jobless rate is falling , as small and large businesses open up or Expand Downtown including ,Panasonic , Prudential , Sony , and a few smaller companies... If you count Indians as Asians then they are growing in Newark mainly in the South Ward of Newark.

That's about where any similarities would end. Oakland has been gentrifying for 10-15 years now, while Newark is still in the very early stages. Also, the neighborhoods are not very similar, like Nexis said Newark is more dense, and it only has a couple truly upscale, safe areas (Forest Hill, similar to Rockridge, and The Ironbound, kind of a Portuguese version of Uptown Oakland). They do share politically incompetent and corrupt local politicians, though I'm not sure how unique that is to a city these days.

Both cities have falling unemployment rates, but are still above the national average. There are more similarities between the two cities than differences. I just find it funny when people here act like Oakland can be compared to NYC or Los Angeles. Talk about DIFFERENT!

Newark has a larger rail / transit , roadway network , Port , airport larger then Oakland , more then 690,000 pass through the city limit each day...I doubt oakland has that much...

Per capita, Oakland has the worst violent crime rate in California. As a whole, you are more likely to be a victim in Oakland than Los Angeles, or SF. Yes if you are a drug dealer, the percentage sky rockets, but that's true of any city, as we both agreed.

So everything else equal, Oakland is more dangerous for people than other cities with lower violent crime rates. That's my point.
It is a common misconception that violent crime rates measure individual crime risks. It does not. It only leads to simplistic and incomplete analyses. It does not consider the geographic and demographic factors that significantly affects the volume, nature, and extent of violent crime.

1. You are using the data incorrectly.
2. It does not include the significant factors that mold crime and affects individual crime risks, such as age, racial and ethnic makeup, lifestyle, gender, and place of residence.(there's more)
3. You fail to recognize the other limitations of the data, such as the difference in degree of crime reporting, geographical happenstance, and the fact that each crime is weighed equally.

I thought Stockton was pretty bad too. Is it close to Oakland's rates?

Excellent pictures! I was not aware that Newark's transit system was so developed, but I'm sure most of that is due to its proximity to New York City, where Oakland does not have a major metropolis next door.

Newark is a very old city with lots of history and lots to offer, it's just kind of on a downswing right now.
