I'm a lifelong NY'er who moved to SF in 1999 when I was 36. Lived in Walnut Creek from 1999-2006. I would take the Bay Area 10 times out of 10 vs NY. Yeah NY is the capital of the world, and maybe the greatest City in the USA (I am somewhat biased), BUT, it's not my Favorite. San Francisco is my favorite, as is the Bay Area experience. I love the closeness of SF and Sausalito, or SF and Napa/Sonoma.

I even like the relative closeness to Lake Tahoe, or Yosemite. I guess you can say that while living in California, I became a Californian, and my love for the state has not left me, despite me being back in NY. I will move back to the Bay Area within the next 10 years, and live there until the day I die. It's just the way of life that I crave, it's hard to describe, but those who love the Bay Area get it, the slower paced (chill) lifestyle is just what I enjoy, as opposed to the frenetic pace of NY. I visit SF every two years (have to wait till 2013), and I'm always happiest whilst in the Bay Area. It just makes me happy, can't explain it. Maybe it's the weather too.

As someone who just moved from SF to Chicago and is enjoying Chicago tremendously, I am curious as to why you did not like Chicago AT ALL?

I find SF to be very laid back, with just the right amount of stimulation. (I live in the Mission District.) This is home now and where I plan to stay. The only thing I miss is good public transportation.

I also looked into Chicago before moving here, but did not like it AT ALL.

I know we are beating a 4 year old thread here but I laughed about this since I am in the opposite boat. Me and my girlfriend moved to SF from NYC in August and I miss NYC a ton. She loves it here so far, and while I have nothing really against it (dont really care for the seasons or lack thereof, yea I said it lol), I just love NYC and need to get back eventually.

It just depends on the person, right?

I moved back from NYC a few weeks ago. I miss it, for sure.

Particularly around this time of the day, the afternoon, because in NYC I was almost always wrapping up work and getting ready to go out. Here not so much. It's a different scene.

Now I'm just ecstatic when I wake up in the morning in a nice house in my big bedroom that looks out over a park. The equivalent in Manhattan would be a lot more. Last week, I got a reminder call from my doctor at Columbia University reminding me of an appointment I'd made months ago. In San Francisco, I can get in to see my specialist in a week. In NYC, I have to take someone out to be seen that quickly.

For me, it's just about the quality of life. I can head to Tahoe if I want snow.
