Look: BART defines "capacity" for itself. Due to decades of budget shortfalls, it runs fewer trains, with fewer cars. Though the article linked here was a bit short on analysis, it did mention that BART ran fewer cars/train than it has the potential for. So BART is creating this "struggle". The article also said the increased ridership wouldn't make much difference in revenue. This means that they will not be able to increase maintenance, and it will be hard-pressed to pay for new cars, also hinted at in the article.

Currently, BART is far from capacity. Just because it's running jam-packed cars doesn't mean capacity has been exceeded. It means BART can't afford to expand capacity.

Yes, as the most used heavy rail system in California with one of the fastest growth rates in ridership, BART is definitely on its way to reaching full capacity hence the need for growth and expansion.

I take it you haven't taken the Pittsburg line in the evenings around 10p-12a. It is pretty consistently packed, many times standing room only. Without any big events happening in SF. Not exactly "empty"

Most of the times I have taken it this year, every seat has been full and 40% of the time standing room only in the end cars, through downtown Oakland.

See, you're also missing her point. That's TWO people already. Seriously, read her post again CAREFULLY, and you'll see why your response is completely missing the mark.

As an aside, I have this theory that people usually read the first sentence (or two) of a post, then form their entire argument and counter based on that. I suppose it's part of our chronic-ADHD society that needs a 4G smart phone to distract themselves at all hours of the day. Glad I have an old technology Samsung flip phone with no internet, nothing. It does have a camera though.

Like I said, you and jade need to go back and read her post (all the way through), think about it for a few minutes, and then respond based on what she actually wrote instead of whatever argument you two have made up in your mind.

No we just disagree with her point. There are sections of BART that are at capacity. This doesn't mean the entire system is. There are choke points. Is the distance between ~San Lorenzo and Dublin at capacity? No. But from about 24-Mission to Rockridge/El Cerrito Del Norte/Fruitvale is generally too full most times of the day. And this is the problem BART metro hopes to resolve.

BARTs mode of expand into the hinderlands doesn't help, as it limits capacity in the center of the system, causing more problems in the more "urban" core of the East Bay.
