Exclamation Oakland Police identify groups involved in Gang War

Looks like the police have finally identified the two groups who have engaged in a bloody gang war since last Summer. One of them is called "The Money Team" and has joined forces with the "Ghost Town". These groups have also been blamed for the murder of two white teens, best friends, killed in August.

These two groups have robbed homes in the Oakland Hills all the way down to Santa Clara County to fund their operations in Oakland.

The war is said to have begun with the murder of a black East Oakland girl in early August related to a prominent member of "The Money Team".

The recent uptick in gun violence in Oakland, including last weekend's shocking number of shootings (fifteen), can be tied back, in large part, to the August murder of a 16-year-old East Oakland girl. Oakland Police have told the Chronicle that some large percentage of recent shootings are connected to this escalated gang war between a group calling themselves The Money Team and another, unnamed gang, leading to multiple rounds of violent retaliation. The Money Team is said to have joined forces with the West Oakland-based gang Ghost Town, and they're being blamed for several home invasion robberies around the Bay in recent months.

One of those robberies resulted in the November 30 murder of 66-year-old Raveesh "Ravi" Kumra, a cell-phone entrepreneur and former owner of Mountain Winery in Saratoga. His wife found him dead in their San Jose Hills home, after it was ransacked. Santa Clara authorities said in a news conference this week that they've connected the crime to The Money Team, and they say that the gang was given a map of the layout of the home by 22-year-old Raven Dixon, a prostitute whom Kumra had hired and brought to the home multiple times.

The Money Team likes to target wealthy people who belong to ethnic groups that are known to keep large sums of money and valuables in their home. Two members of the group, Deangelo Austin, 21, and Lukis Anderson, 26, and one member of Ghost Town, Javier Garcia, 21, have been arrested and charged in the murder, and Dixon has been charged as an accessory.
We would also surmise that there is a likely connection here to the gruesome, unprovoked murders of two teenage best friends in late November in East Oakland, which could have been retaliation for the earlier, August murder of the 16-year-old girl.

What kind of idiotic police force publicly identifies suspects before they round them up?

The other unnamed group is probably Acorn. There's been back-and-forth between Acorn and Ghost Town for years. Although I've never heard of Money Team they're probably based in the 70's/80's... the word in Oakland is that there's conflict between Acorn and the 70's/80's.

Between Money Team and Ghost Town, and the multiple gangs they are warring with, they probably out number the police by a good number. So they probably can't round all of them up.

Oakland is in for a violent year if these gangs don't call a truce, or the major leaders are arrested.

They're not gangs precisely because there are no "major leaders". The conflict between Acorn and Ghost Town stemmed from people from Acorn and Ghost Town getting into it at Mack. And from the sound of it, the main reason why Acorn and the 70's have problems is because that girl got killed... in other words, a personal conflict that spun out of control with multiple retaliation killings.

The deaths of those two white girls by High Street being tied to either of the conflicts at all though sounds like BS. It sounds more like the OPD is trying to cover its *** by pinning the tail on a couple donkeys.

Where do you see Oaklanders "siding with the gangs"? Because I doubt that the 3 groups had something to do with the 2 girls that got killed and that the OPD are probably feeling a little sheepish at this point about having made no progress solving one of the - if not the - most high-profile murder cases of 2012?

How do you know any of this public press release stuff from OPD has any basis in reality?

As has been asked, why would they announce who they're going after before rounding them up?

Your comments sort of reinforce the feeling that Oakland citizens are anti-police.

"They're lying"

"Who says they're telling the truth?"

This exemplifies what's wrong with Oakland PD and cooperation with its citizens.

I don't believe this press release at all. To be perfectly honest, I believe it was a PR tactic and nothing more. OPD wanted to make it look like they were doing something. Until there is a full restructuring of the police force and strategies, I'll file announcements like these under PR BS.

I see no reason why Oakland PD would lie, but that seems like the typical response about the Oakland PD from most Oaklanders. "We don't trust them!" That is very sad.

Of course the same Oaklanders trust everything that comes out of Mayor Quan's mouth, for instance her claim that 90% of crime occurs in 100 blocks of the city (which she later admitted was false and untrue).

Seems like picking and discarding data that doesn't agree with a pre-determined viewpoint that paints the city in a better light. Not exactly productive or helpful IMO.
