Our family of four will be relocating to the WC/Clayton area from Texas in June. We will be look for a single family rental home. What is the best way to do this? Go through a realtor? Do it on our own using zillow.com and craigslist? Just drive around looking for "For Rent" signs? I know that different areas have different "protocols" for finding rental properties...just wondering what the East Bay's "protocol" is!

Thank you in advance for your help!

The majority of rentals in the bay area are posted and found via craigslist. There are also some large managed complexes that sometimes post on craigslist, but also either have their own website and/or can be found on rental sites like apartments.com. Finally there are a small amount of old school landlord/managers that don't post on craigslist (such as the building I live in in San Mateo that fills rentals through "for rent" signs and word of mouth), but these situations are definitely the exception and can be rare. If you stumble upon one of these, though, I found that there is often less competition and the landlords that I've run across that do this seem more genuine than most (just an observation).

But a short answer to your question: craigslist.com

Also padmapper.com and hotpads.com work well.

Lots of listings for Walnut Creek on Craig's List, should be easy to find a place.
