I did a house share in an enormous home in El Cerrito for $750 per month, for about 6 months, while I looked for an apartment. I shared this house with five other people, but because it was so large (a mansion, really) it was very private. Our mix was 24-year-old female Cal grad students to 42 year-old male professionals and a few in-between. The drawback was that it was way up on the hill, so getting to and from the BART station (which was just 2 miles away or so) was impractical without a car. There was an AC Transit bus that went up and down the hill, but I never used it.

This place was a rare gem in the Bay Area and I was lucky to find it. It was a guy's house whose wife left him and he was just renting it to cover the mortgage when he moved to San Francisco. The 42-year old had been there, sharing the house with the others for a few years. He didn't want to let it go...and his room was $1100.

Bottom line, as stated above, in that price range, you're going to have to compromise to some degree. The same factors pricing you out of NYC are at work in the Bay Area.

In SF I would look at the Sunset and Parkside for that price...it's not hip/trendy/glamorous, etc but it's home to many families and there is a reason for that because violent crime is rare. Property crime happens but... things can be replaced. Served by the N Judah, L Taraval and numerous bus routes. Try Craigslist...don't expect anything new or spacious...think tiny studio, maybe an illegal in-law unit or even a legal one!

Consider rooming with people as a way to expand your options.

San Francisco is cheaper than New York. Don't move for a ****ty ghetto experience though. Get roommates and live in a decent area.
