there seems to be a double standard here.
for around $500-600,000 in oakland you can find a home in a nice safe walkable urban area with great dining shopping and good schools. in san francisco a nice safe walkable urban area with great dining shopping without good schools would cost around $1 million and up.
this is appealing to people who want an urban lifestyle for a more affordable price than sf.

the uptown area has developed remarkably over the last 5-8 years gaining a vibrant night life on friday and satuday nights iit is undeniable uptown is an area with a nationally recognized dining and entertainment scene(nyt, latimes ,boston glope, forbes, travel+leisure etc) with a 15 minute bart ride to downtown sf

in uptown you can purchase a nice sized, well appointed condo with mortgage payment being the same or less than rent in san francisco. some people like the idea of instead putting that $2700 a month in someone elses pocket you give yourself equity and tax deduction.

there is no evidence that the gentrification of uptown has slowed and no evidence that rents are going down in san francisco. uptown should continue to be an attractive and more affordable option.

You do know San Francisco has less land than Oakland right? It's the same with Manhattan, prices are high due to lack of land or area to develop. It's a poor comparison. There is a reason why SF costs more.

Hence, Oakland's nice areas are a bargain compared to SFs nice areas.

Oakland has too many bad schools and crime for these prices. I'll pay them in Berkeley, not Oakland.
Except that you wouldn't pay them in Berkeley. You would pay more.
