I may be moving from Davis to San Mateo for a job soon. I don't know the area at all, but the office is on Gateway Drive. Coming from Davis, I've been kind of coddled and am used to living in a really safe and quiet neighborhood and am hoping to find something similar. I'm willing to deal with some kind of commute if it means I can live in an area where I don't have to worry about break-ins or loud parties. I'm a very light sleeper and I get anxiety type issues if I have to listen to my neighbors talking through the walls all the time. I'd be working with a budget of about $2,000 and I only need a one-bedroom or even a studio. Is a safe, quiet place too much to hope for on that budget? Any neighborhoods or complexes I should be looking at specifically? Thanks for any help.

Edit: I also have a small dog if that matters

Anything west of El Camino is nice... Hillsdale is a decent area as well the area between 9th and 17th below South B Street. The area between 8th and E. 16th is okay but not as nice as between 9th and 17th below South B Street. I'd recommend skipping North Central (between E. 4th, 101, South Claremont Street and E. Poplar) and definitely avoid anything above 101 (i.e. Shoreview).

$2k for 1BR is doable. You should extend your search to Foster City, Redwood Shores, Belmont, and San Carlos as well:

your company location is right on the border of Foster City.

You should be able to find 1br apt. there and be able to actually walk to your place. Foster City is a quiet family oriented community. Waterfront locations are good additions to the quiet attitude there.
