This is what I see from this forum:

Oakland: To Know it is to Love it

That is clearly a cheerleading thread made to promote Oakland's attractions. I love what Oakland has to offer but should I be believing the things in that thread or it it just shameless promotion full of bias?

Then you have homicide and crime threads as well. Those usually get dismissed quickly as being inaccurate and bias.
Which begs the question : Why wouldn't you believe articles by Forbes, the new York Times,Boston globe,La Times, conde Nast traveler,BusinessWeek about Oakland?
The urban renewal in Oakland is national news but the Oakland bashers can't even acknowledge it.

So you're missing my point here. All those publications you listed are part of the "media" which many of you claimed to be bias against Oakland. How do you pick and choose which one is accurate and which one is sensationalism? Of course Sfgate has an axe to grind vs Oakland though right? How about the Oakland Tribune?

Or Contra Costa Times, or KTVU which did a huge feature on gang violence in Oakland just a week ago.

I guess if it's negative news, then it's bias and slander. But hey, if Forbes says that Oakland real restate is smokin', then it MUST be true.

I still don't understand why there is so much extra venom directed towards Oakland.

I am on my phone, please forgive the typos.

That's what I'm getting at.

Why would the media purposefully distort anything about Oakland? They probably make tons of money from people within Oakland.

Here is a question. Why does the media report more frequently on certain types of incidents when they occur in Oakland, and less frequently when the same types incidents occur outside of Oakland.

As I said earlier, both narratives (bad/good) of Oakland sell particularly well. People have a morbid fascination with crime (especially when they don't live in the place being reported on), but they also like reading stories about hot trends and nightlife. SF has a lot of crime, roughly around the same number of murders per year as Oakland, although it has twice the population. However, the number one industry that keeps SF going isn't tech/finance like a lot of people seem to think, it's actually tourism. It's an international hotspot for tourism. The same can't be said for Oakland- its economy is based mostly on the port industry. While the Uptown/Temescal revival is interesting and important to the city's recovery, it doesn't even come close to the amount of money that's spent in SF by tourists. Besides, most of the people enjoying Oakland's dining scene and nightlife are East Bay and SF residents, not tourists flying in from all over the world.

When a shooting/murder happens in Oakland, a headline usually reads: DOUBLE MURDER IN OAKLAND, while omitting the actual neighborhood (usually Deep East Oakland or West Oakland). In SF, it will say: SHOOTING IN BAYVIEW or 2 SLAIN IN MISSION- as if SF is some enormous city where crime rarely happens. This point has been brought up at least a 1000 times, but nobody seems to have a rebuttal. I wonder why?

Uh because the way you framed your statement is completely false and untrue.

The media reports more about crime in Oakland because crime OCCURS MORE in Oakland, not because Danville and San Ramon gangs are somehow being ignored.
