-Quiet, mostly residential, not too far away from the action in DT, Mission and the Marina - maybe just a long walk or a transit stop away, and central to just about everywhere else.

-Relatively safe, walkable and close to public transport.

-Near a park or green area or some body of water.

-Access to hiking and other outdoor activities, art and music events, concerts, outdoor festivals, wine bars and events, lounges, coffee shops, restaurants, and unique hip establishments with their own identity.

So....which one is it?

Um... you've described most of the residential neighborhoods in the city. There isn't just one.

Isebiel is correct, but my choice for the ideal for all those things would be the Inner Sunset near 9th Ave & Irving. Shops, hangouts, safe, near the park, on the N-Judah line. If you needed something even more "central", then you don't get anymore central than the Duboce Triangle.

I'd go with Russian Hill. In fact, that's exactly what I did.

Nob Hill and Cow Hollow (adjacent to Russian Hill) obviously also fit the bill, but as stated above, many others do too.

I'd go with Marina, Cow Hollow, Pacific Heights

Sounds like Cole Valley. Definitely quiet and residential. The N Train will take you downtown. The 43 bus will take you directly to the Marina. The 33 bus takes you to Castro St. and the Mission, or just ride the N train to Church and walk. Very short walk to Haight St. Close to Golden Gate Park. Since Cole Valley is near the geographic center of the city you are never more than 4 miles away from anything.

Cole Valley is a good choice. I was thinking of the Duboce Triangle as an area where you could walk to the Mission, catch the 22 Fillmore trolleybus to the Marina, catch the N or J light rail downtown. But there are lots of other areas too.
