It's true. The 580/680 bottleneck is one of the worst I've ever encountered. It can add 30 minutes alone to most commutes.

Another huge one is the 580/80 merge southbound in the East Bay. That one is never clear unless it's 3am, and you be jammed from the merge pretty much all the way to the split (Bridge, Oakland, San Jose). On the weekends, you might as well just take BART if you need to get into the city.

Bay Area traffic congestion is usually during rush hour and/or near special events. LA's "rush hour" seems to start early and last into the evening, and on weekends, from my experiences.

Oh absolutely. Without BART we would have the worst traffic in the country. Its scary how bad it gets when BART is offline--reminded me of Brazil.

More like reality.

Workers the use Public Transit:
SF MSA: 14.6%
LA MSA: 6.2%

If public transit was just as good in LA then why don't more people use it? It would interesting to see it broken down by income levels of workers too as LA has a MASSIVE underclass that simply can't afford to drive, which is probably why their numbers are even as high as they are.

This coming from the guy that thinks LA has cleaner air too! haha!

Also Nimtz at the 101, worst bottleneck ever. Add 30-60 minutes to your commute if you ever have to go North on th 101 from the Southbay at 5-7pm.

Your premise is flawed. It doesn't prove anything about the quality of the transit.

If you had posted average travel times, or something it might be worth a look, but as it is, your post makes no sense in the context of the debate.

LA traffic's not that bad in the middle of the day or after 8pm at night or so, or even on weekends.

That said, I never thought Bay Area traffic was that bad outside of rush hour either. Though the Bay Bridge can be clogged up pretty much any time of day or night, especially when everyone is trying to get to Tahoe.

Another thing, travel within the city is actually much better in L.A than S.F.

MUNI buses have an average speed of 8.7 miles an hour.

Another study clocked MUNI even LOWER at 8.1 mph:

Los Angeles Metro: 12.3 mph

No comparison there.
