Hello,

I have just rented a place in west Berkeley, right off university and San Pablo area. Further research, I have found opinions that it's not the safest area. Can anyone confirm the safety of the area? I will be working in dt sf and will possibly be working late near 11pm - will it be a problem walking from north Berkeley Bart station to around university and San Pablo? And are there any ways I can avoid any problems, other than not using my phone at night, show strong posture/eye contact, etc? Thanks in advance.

It's not the best area of Berkeley but this is relative. It's no where near as bad as bad areas in other cities. Things can ge a bit sketchy that late at night but when you leave the BART station walk over to University then walk down. Berkeley's quiet streets tend to be darker than those of other cities. But other than that, use common sense which sounds like you do have.

I wouldn't walk from BART to San Pablo at night. Can't you take a bus?

You can buy a transfer to the bus system inside the BART station. I don't know if getting a monthly bus pass would be worth it to you. Depends on if you ever use AC Transit outside of your work commute.

It'd be better to walk the short distance than to stand alone at a bus stop

Depends on the schedule. But maybe so, if it's not too far.

Thought you knew Berkeley? It's about a 10 minute walk at the most from North Berkeley BART to San Pablo. Buses running late at night would have you waiting a minimum of 10 minutes.

I'm not very familiar with much below Shattuck in the downtown area, except for the first block or two.

Thanks guys! I will scope out the area before work starts, and I suppose this will be a good time to start carrying pepper spray
