So I finally found a studio in LPH but the owner received so many applications that it took her an entire month to decide on me. I didn't know if I was going to get the place so I didn't give 30 day notice at my current apartment since I didn't want to chance not having a place to stay at all. Since it took her so long to decide I thought she would give me a chance to give 30 days notice. She won't and wants me to move in asap.

I've never been in this situation because previously after submitting my application the landlord would let me know within a week whether I got the place or not. Is this the norm in San Francisco or was this an anomaly? My friend told me it was the norm and people here simply risk being without a place or are willing to pay dual rents.

Yes, it's definitely been the norm, especially when there's such tough competition for rentals. I've always expected to either lose out on some deposit from one place and/or pay extra just so I could hold a place. I know, it's ridiculous!

Unfortunately that is the way things seem to be going especially in places that are just so dang crowded.
