It has a nice little downtown, too. A couple of movie theaters, a fab home-made ice cream shop, probably some bars (it's a student town, after all), redwood forests for hiking, 2 or 3 natural/organic grocers, and plenty of entertainment around the Boardwalk.

The OP wouldn't have to drive to San Fran for something to do, like he was planning to do from Bolinas, in Santa Cruz. He & friends could always drive up to Half Moon Bay, or explore the coast, if they want a change of scenery for a day.

ps. A huge thank you to all the people who posted links and suggestions. Very helpful!
I'm partial to the coastal area north of SF than south having spent lots of time over the last 35yrs up and down California's coast.

If you want to get picky Point Reyes north to Jenner on Hwy1 and the country between the coast and 101 is my favorite area of that part of the state.

Dillion Beach being my absolute all time favorite place to stay and explore out from there.

I should have mentioned that Santa Cruz does indeed have a nice walkable downtown along Pacific Ave. with restaurants, bars, shops and a nice old movie theater. There are street musicians and some street vendors. It's not far from the boardwalk. There is a trolley between the boardwalk and downtown for 25 cents! www.scruzwiki.org/Pacific_Avenue

There is also the Santa Cruz beach train that runs from the boardwalk north into the redwoods near Felton (since you don't have a car) www.roaringcamp.com/beachtrain

I have to agree with all responses here. More to do in half moon bay, but it's foggier and colder there. So it's a trade off. Santa Cruz would be funner all around. Warmer, tons of stuff to do, really beachy. You could fly to SJO and take transit there pretty quickly.
