I was driving in San Francisco a few days ago when I was caught in traffic. Traffic was moving slow (about 5-10 mph) and as I was slowly moving forward, I saw a light flash above and to the right of me. I was worried that I might be getting cited so I went to the same location to see if there were any cameras and couldn't really find any. I only saw a very small square light thingy on top of a pole. I did further research by going to a website that supposedly shows ALL red light camera locations. http://california.drivinguniversity....o-california/I was on none of the streets that were showsn on the website for red light camera locations.I made a right turn on 3rd street and approaching where Kearny turns into Geary. Does anyone know what location I am talking about? The website says that the red light locations comes directly from the DMV. Either they're wrong and missed a location or there's something I don't know. If it wasn't a red light camera, then what flashed? There were no signs that says "photo enforced". Can someone give me some help regarding this matter? Thanks in advance!Regards,Daniel

You don't technically have to pay those you know, and they have no recourse to collect money from you.

How so? We have traffic speeding photo-SUV's in New Mexico, and everyone hates them. The fine is always $100, and since they photo your license plate, there's no way to contest it.

They can't legally do anything to you until they confirm the person in the photo is you. They cannot legally do anything to your DMV record, to your insurance, etc. They will send a court summons to you if you don't respond, but even then, if you don't respond, they can't give you a "failure to appear" because they still haven't confirmed the person in the photo is you. Basically just don't acknowledge the ticket at all, and it goes away.

It's gotten so bad, LA County doesn't even process the red light tickets anymore.

The red light cameras also cause other problems. Like exposing cheating wives/husbands/boyfriends/girlfriends. :P

I've actually heard this before. It's sort of like those jury summons. In all my adult life, I've only ever reported to one. They can't confirm you ever received it and my address changes very frequently.

Fascinating. They put all kinds of threats in the summons re: what will happen if you don't respond. The best strategy is to present yourself as a biased juror when you fill out the info forms and go through the interviews. Write down stuff like, "Cops always lie", or if it's a death sentence trial, put down that you can't vote for the death penalty due to religious reasons. You can make yourself an undesirable juror so that they don't choose you in the end.

Yeah, but it doesn't stop them from sending threatening material in the mail to "scare" you into responding. As SOON as you respond, they have you, because you just confirmed the person they are seeking was you.

Also, another tip, if you go to court for another ticket and they find the "red light camera" ticket on your record, just deny knowing about it, and they still can't do anything about it. Just play dumb.

How do I know all of this? Let's just say I've become an expert of escaping from municipal tickets in my old age. My current record is 4 defeated parking tickets, 1 defeated speeding ticket, and 1 defeated red light camera ticket. My DMV record is sparkling.

One time I got a parking ticket for overstaying at a mall parking meter (aka private). I was 5 minutes late. Maybe 10. Not long. Anyway the ticket didn't have a number to call on it or anything. I just ignored. This was 5 years ago. I still park at the mall with no consequence. They have more than made up for it with the number of times I have paid for parking there.
