Actually I use taxis all the time in SF because (wait for it........) I take BART from WC/PH often!!

Thankfully the OP is smart enough to disregard the rantings from some transplant that basically lives in San Mateo County and has ZERO experience going to and from the city from Walnut Creek via BART.

Let it go, sav...I sense this poster is just here to let off steam and pick fights over nothing. I'm reminded of my kid when he went through puberty.

This thread sure has gotten heated, even though the OP has already stated their preference of going the Walnut Creek route. Having lived in WC for 7 years, and then having stayed at a WC hotel a few years back, yet still being able to do what I usually do while staying in the city of SF, I think it's a very good alternative.

Believe me, back in 2009 when I got an awesome deal for a week's stay at the Mark Hopkins Hotel and round trip airfair for $1,100, I would have never have thought about staying outside SF. BUT, finding those kinds of deals nowadays is virtually impossible. If you know Walnut Creek and/or stayed at a hotel there as your homebase, you truly would enjoy it as a viable option to staying in the city. Bart closing at 12:30am being the ONLY negative I could see.

The deal you got at the Mark Hopkins hotel is impossible to find these days. Know you are lucky to pay $1100 for 2 nights at the Mark Hopkins. Know the Comort Inn on Lombard and Van Ness charges $200 a night plus $35 a day extra for parking.

I know, I miss those days, lol. 2 years later in 2011, I paid $1,400 for only 5 nights (round trip flight also), in a hotel I really didn't like. The Mark Hopkins really is a perfectly situated hotel as far as distance to things in SF. Plus the convenient cablecar that stops right in front, so you don't have to walk up California Street if you don't want to.

Why pay for BART, MUNI, and Taxis if you don't have to. I'm done talking to a person who doesnt have a clue what they are talking about lol.

@OP: If you want specific addresses for easy parking and points of interests outside the tourist traps let me know.
I'm going to be driving my own car from the LA area. Before Walnut Creek I'm spending one night in the foothills area which is Sonora,California
