This happened right outside my apartment yesterday on Lee Street... Could have been me getting shot up as I was outside just a half an hour before. I'm going to see if I can relocate back to LA... I gave Oakland a shot, but come on... This is supposed to be the "good" part of Oakland.

I have two friends that moved from SF to Oakland. One moved because she got a divorce and couldn't afford SF. The other because of school. The one that got a divorce had her car broken into around Lake Merrit after 4 months. The other came home early two weeks ago and found three robbers in his place. He managed to hit two of them with a golf club and all three ran out luckily.

I feel your pain, but crime also occurs in the "good" parts of LA also.

Well you tried living in Oakland for 4-5 years, I'm pretty sure you gave it a fair shake. No arguing with that.

Capitalism creates winners and losers - it's the nature of the game. If you're looking to relocate for a better life just go the whole way and move to one of the Scandinavian countries.

Uhhh. On the export side, America is about freedom, opportunity, and civil rights. Yeah sure. On the dark side America is about guns, domination, and money. If you're surprised there's robbery, you have not been paying attention.

To the OP, my car got broken into in SOMA. That's life in the city. Move to a quiet suburb and you will be happier.

Crime is everywhere. You can't keep running. Some places may be worse than others but you also can't go by media reporting. You should probably ask the residents and get a more current picture of any one neighborhood. A place is so much more than crime figures.
It seems lately there are a lot of threads about crime here and all they do is rile people up and start trouble. I say we put all the crime discussions in one thread and start a more positive bunch of threads about the Bay Area. It's unique in the world and should not be bashed like it has been. The economy is bad everywhere and every place can do with some changes. Lots has to do with politics. You may say the truth must be told but when it serves no purpose other than to rip a place apart, it's silly.
