Actually, I think I'm changing my opinion. I think L.A and Miami are more materialistic, but the Bay Area is more smug and self-centered.

Having lived in Southern California for 2+ decades, I would say that parts of SoCal (especially OC, the westside, Beverly Hills, the beach cities, Calabasas, etc) are much more materialistic. Of course, parts of the Bay Area are, but I think SoCal has us beat in this regard.
