I guess hating on people that like chains is "so Bay Area" too. I don't like most but I don't really care if people do either except when they try to drag me to one.

My sister is always trying to go to a chain when we are in the suburbs. Her comment is something like "when was the last time you went to ......"

I always reply hopefully never again. But there are some exceptions. Texas Roadhouse for the bread. And Chickfila for the nuggets.

Absolutely! I'm a big fan of Pica Pica Maize Kitchen (2 locations), Firewood (3 locations), Super Duper (3 locations), and several other small, local chain restaurants and stores.

My friend has learned never to suggest eating at BJ's Brewhouse ever again to me. Or the Cheesecake Factory either, I really wish they would have put a Yardhouse there instead.

I don't avoid all chains of course, I'll still go to Chick Fil A, In-n-Out, Daphne's, L&L, etc.. Not too many sit down restaurants I can stand though.

I think places like Walnut Creek offer a good mix of chain and non-chain restaurants to satisfy most people.

Also one local chain I can't stand is Kinders, worse bbq ever yet everyone swears by it.

Seriously. That place is terrible. I don't know what people are talking about. I also was not impressed by the BBQ I had in Austin, whatever their local BBQ chain was. Also terrible.

HUGE difference between small/local chains and Applebee's, Chilli's, Olive Garden, etc.

And I actually like the ball tip sandwich at Kinder's. Used to get that lunch special all the time when I was a student at DVC. Wasn't big on anything else they had though...

Well, sure. But it does raise a semi-interesting question: at what point is a chain too small, or too big, to satisfy the desires of a chain enthusiast or a chain hater, respectively?
