Also if you're not expecting to live an "American Middle-Class" lifestyle, it'll go a lot farther... meaning $200/month internet TV, driving newer cars, eating out every other day, every member of the family has to have an iPhone, hitting up the malls for some shopping once a week... $90k would be a very comfortable salary in most of the country. In the Bay Area, it isn't even middle-class unless you get pushed out pretty far. Hayward? Sure. Anywhere on the Peninsula or most of the South Bay? Not so much.

I'm in a family of three and we live off about 48-50K a year. 90K would be a dream. You'll do fine with the right amount of saving and location of your home.

Thank You very much EVERYONE for your suggestions and comments. You guys has really helped me to get an understanding of the situation when I will be in USA.

To answer some of the questions,

My office is in Livermore so preference will be to rent a 2 bed apratment in the same City.

I will be the only earner for my family. My wife will taking care of child at home, at least we can save child care expenses

I will get salary raise each year. Hopefully it won't be 90K for a long time. I hope so

I am planning to buy a used car with the budget in less than 5k.

Thanks Again

Ok well Livermore is pretty far East from Silicon Valley and SF so it's cheaper. Not dirt cheap but definitely cheaper than say Mountain View. See what you can find in Livermore on craigslist in your budget, and maybe look at Tracy if you are ok with commuting over the hill and want more housing for your money.

You already have the right mindset. I think you'll do just fine with the right amount of budgeting.

We live in Orange County and that's no picnic financially, and I know the Bay Area is expensive... but it's so weird to hear "90K" and "qualify for any sort of assistance" anywhere near each other in the same sentence! What is this world coming to???

Livermore is quite far East and much cheaper than Silicon Valley. You'll be fine since you have the right mindset. Good luck!

Are you ever going to go back home to visit? If so, there goes any potential savings.

Here is the thing, it isn't about what you are being offered right now but the potential you see for your income a little later on. So a lot depends on your length of stay and your intentions in that regard.

People can and do live comfortably on that salary, it is all about expectations. When you say you're the common Pakistani family, that could change quickly when exposed to some place like the SF Bay Area. The social influences of such a place are tremendous and exist in daily life 24x7.

Software engineers are in demand all over but it is the very good ones that command higher compensation packages. You didn't mention if the job was for salary only or had other compensations attached to it. If you are negotiating you can ask for Internet connectivity compensation without too much risk. That single item though, can often be as much as $100 per/mo. or more. As a software engineer I think the expectation would be that you maintain a very high speed Internet service at home but also for some mobile device like laptop/tablet and for sure a phone. It adds up very quickly to the tune of several thousand dollars per year. Get that as an included benefit, most tech companies don't have a problem providing it.

Calling back home often? Another expense but one that can be mitigated via technology benefits from the employer.

Book your flights back home to visit through the company's travel agency, you can often get very good deals that way.

If you are considering a smaller company, beware that in the SF Bay Area, scams are rampant, enticing people to contract for tech jobs that turn out to be more about a donation of your time and energy than much else. Not trying to scare you but having eyes wide open can be the difference between success and finishing your contracted work in the poor house.
