Out of towner here and moving to Concord, CA. I found a bit too late to avoid the Monument/Detriot areas. I am renting a house east of Monument off Oak Grove. I google-mapped the street and it looks like a cute little cul-de-sac. I am from Boston, so "bad areas" may mean something different to me, but nothing I see looks "bad". I do not have children so am not concerned about the poor schools that I keep reading about, but definitely do not want to live somewhere where I am scared to go out at night. Is this area really as bad as it is sounding in these forums? Like, is it worth breaking my lease, paying the penalty and looking elsewhere? Any thoughts are appreciated

Certainly Concord's least desirable area but unsafe? I think it's pretty tame. There are a lot of apartment complexes and it has a lot of lower income groups but I've never had any trouble over there. My only real experience was bike riding through but people were friendly.

I probably wouldn't break my lease. Give it a shot.

Thanks Parti - I think I got too excited when I found a house to rent for a decent price. At first glance, the house appeared to be on the Pleasant Hill/Concord line, and I had not heard one bad thing about the PH area, so I figured I was good to go. Maybe if I just take Treat to Oak Grove and just pretend Monument does not exist, I can trick myself
Thanks for the reply!

If ever you need to rent in the future, my friend just rented a room in a really nice house in Pittsburg (not a great city, but is a nice neighborhood) for $550/month (Craigslist).

I would avoid it. High crime area, gangs, drug deals, lots of riff raff. I grew up in Concord and my dad was a police officer there. Still have friends on the force and trust me, you don't want to live there! Hope you can find something else. Pleasant Hill is definitely better and lots of cute places! Good luck!

*edited to say I don't mean you don't want to live in Concord in general, just not in the area that you are talking about, better known as the Four Corners area.

Concord is nothing like some ares of Oakland. Why don't you do a spotcrime.com search? Put in the address and check out the crimes that pop up on the map.

My daughter was looking to buy in Concord, but couldn't afford it, and moved to the Oakland hills where she could afford to buy. When we checked crime in Concord, it was really minimal.

She doesn't go for walks in her neighborhood in Oakland, but she comes and goes at all hours and feels safe enough, even there, and she's a young, single woman. I think you'll be fine in Concord.
