Yeah you're right, I was thinking of a different spot on 4th street around Jackson in JLS, I forget the name though. the shooting was at Sweet Jimmie's though, not the other one.

Were there multiple Sweet Jimmie's? There was the place that predated the Night Light, which was different from the place mentioned here - Seeking Oakland's Soul In The 'New Oakland' : Code Switch : NPR

Lol this is confusing... I remembered Sweet Jimmie's being on or by 4th in JLS area but it's listed online around where the New Parish is now.

EDIT: Wait, there definitely used to be one in JLS.

sweet jimmie's, broadway, oakland - Google Maps

That's where the shooting was. I never knew there was a second one.

Has JLS changed that much by now? If so then I'll rescind my comment about ghetto places. I've been there many times but last time was probably about a year ago, there just were a few cheap looking diners here and there that looked kinda sleazy. Also the area between JLS and downtown was always really really dumpy.

You probably missed a few spots. A few things have opened in. The past year on broadway, but the places off broadway have been pretty nice for the past 5-10 years. You missed the days of TGI Fridays and El Torito.

I am on my phone, please forgive the typos.

I recently received two private messages about Oakland, that I deem offensive. Thank goodness the person is no longer a member.

What is it about Oakland that drives some people to criticize the city so harshly? Obviously, I'm aware that there are pockets of poverty and crime, but this does not represent the entire city.

I'm sorry to hear that you received such messages. I don't know why, but for some reason this forum seems to attract a lot of comments/threads about stereotyping Oakland's crime and poverty, to the point that it has become a nuisance that is heavily monitored on this forum.

You are right that Oakland, like any other major urban area, does have crime and poverty issues, but by no means does it define the whole city.

It is like some of those people have Oakland google alerts and just run in the minute there is a positive Oakland story.

Oakland gets the one-dimensional media coverage, so "grit, violence, and hard-living" become dominating narratives for the city. Oakland getting it's share of positive coverage interrupts that narrative, sending people into chaos trying to restore order. Nevermind that "grit, violence, and hard living" is a not a reality for all Oaklanders.
