Somebody could make an awful lot of money off that lumber.

I read that when a certain park was created in Seattle, the head of the Parks Dept. at the time logged the property first, of the old-growth cedars that were there, and pocketed the money. Stuff happens. That's why I was curious.

There will still be eucalyptus trees around town; this project is just on university land, and around the Caldecott Tunnel.

Eucaluptus trees rob the soil of nutrients. But as long as you're not planning to grow anything around 'em, I don't see a problem with leaving some around. After so many years generations, I wonder how they plan to revive the soil so that native species can grow in the logged areas, anyway.

Who gives a crap if they are non native? Eucalyptus trees are all over the Bay and they are one of the most defining beautiful aspects of this place. Nothing beats walking through Golden Gate Park with a crisp breeze and the smell of eucalyptus.

Govn agencies have been cutting them down in SF too and it just seems ridiculous to me.

Well, the soil under GG Park is sand, so maybe the eucalyptus is one of the few trees that can grow there, anyway.

Might look neat, but they're allelopathic to just about everything near them.

In California the annual vegetation adjacent to naturalized stands of Eucalyptus camaldulensis often is inhibited severely. Annual herbs rarely survive to maturity where Eucalyptus litter accumulates.

They're chipping them -- I don't think Eucalyptus is good lumber material. Very hard to work with, and somewhat brittle, if I remember correctly.
