I'm a CA native, born in Walnut Creek, grew up in Pleasant Hill and Concord. My husband, kids and I moved to the Charlotte, NC area in 2005 and I've been miserable ever since. We moved because we thought the cost of living was cheaper and we could get more bang for our buck. Yeah, not so much. And add the storms, humidity 7-8 months out of the year, super creepy bugs, and confederate flags, no thanks! We are trying like crazy to move back to the Bay Area, but it's happening a lot slower than we'd like. I miss CA like crazy.

This says it all. The reason people stay is because of the weather and the culture. And of course, family.

For me, semi-retired, I also am getting back some of the taxes I've paid here. I'm on federal disability, and the state of CA supplements it. Also, I'm on Medi-Cal, which is pretty decent health insurance, even though we no longer get dental or vision. So, I get more for my previously-paid tax dollars by staying in CA than moving to many other states.

I've moved away from CA a couple of time. I'm not moving again. Couldn't pay me to live in the PNW again. Weather is not worth it.

Lived in TN, didn't like the culture, hated the humidity.

The only other state i would consider, despite the weather, is TX, because I like the culture, even though I'm democrat. Maybe it's because I have no problem with guns LOL!

Right now I can only afford the SF Bay Area because my part-time job includes a "free" apartment. Who knows when that may end, so I'm planning to relocate to Redding, where I can stay in CA, yet afford to live alone. No more roommates for me, either.

I could exist just about anywhere but to be comfortable I don't want extreme weather, hot or cold. I'd also need some things to do and a culture I'm comfortable in so when you factor in all that it limits the places I could actually LIVE.

no thanks.
Yes, they are called skyways or skywalks. Both Minneapolis and Rochester have them. Apartments also have double-glass windows and heated garages. The locals joke winter is the best seven months of the year.

Personally, I only know people who moved to the San Francisco DMA, rather than from it. My youngest brother briefly lived in Davis in a contractor position. I should ask him sometime how many San Fran transplants he met.
