i am a single 30 something female vegan residing in kansas city, Missouri. i bar-tend part-time and massage part-time. i have always loved the bay area yet it is so pricey. i enjoy walking to do my grocery shopping, to go to bars, cafes, church, art galleries, bookstores, flowershops, yoga studio.where in the bay could i live comfortably and not like a college student pinching pennies? i do like being near the water.

haha, well if you want to be near the water, you have to be willing to pay for that access!

HOWEVER, Emeryville, which is a lower-cost slice of Berkeley right on the Bay, might work for you. Lots of shops in walking distance, and more shops, restaurants and galleries within an easy bus ride.

Massage licensing in CA is very easy in most cases. It goes county by county, minimal requirements. Berkeley and north Oakland (Rockridge) are great for the walkability and neighborhoods full of amenities. Take a look at Craigslist rentals for:
Rockridge
North Berkeley/Berkeley Hills
Emeryville
Alameda (also has some Bay beachfront)

Not another one of these. Let me put it this way, if you have to ask, you can't afford it....

If you can figure out a way to pull in about $2000 per month after taxes, you could live with or maybe without roommates (in a studio) in the East Bay, somewhere like Albany, north of Lake Merritt in Oakland, etc.

Also Emeryville sucks unless you want to go shopping at Target and Ikea (are you really going to do that every day?) or really want a new but pricey condo, and you sure don't sound like that kinda person. Compared with Oakland and Berkeley, Emeryville is basically a big parking lot with a lot of traffic.

Santa Cruz might be a good fit, though it's a bit pricey, too. But worth a look, definitely.

E-ville is terrible for walking around. There are not sufficient sidewalks and there are areas of town that are nearly inaccessible to pedestrians. Try Berkeley or Oakland.

Around Lake Merrit would be great for you.

I am on my phone, please forgive the typos.
