I recently received a job in Union City. My husband and I will be relocating from the Sacramento Area and are trying to figure out the most affordable and (relatively) safest area to move to. We are limited to just my income until he can find a job in the area. I know that traffic is horrible during rush hour but are there some areas that are better than others? I would prefer to keep my commute under 40 minutes. Is that even realistic? Any Advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you!

Well just live in Union City and keep your commute really short. If schools are a concern Fremont will have better schools and will still be a short commute.

What's your price range?

The East Bay is pretty affordable. It'll still be a sticker shock from Sac, but less expensive than the Peninsula.

Fremont or Castro Valley would be places I would look at.

I agree with this. Union City proper would keep your commute short, is fairly affordable by Bay Area standards and is mostly safe (though there are a few sketchy areas like Decoto in Union City.)

Fremont. There's no need for a long commute; Union City is surrounded by relatively affordable communities ("relative" in a Bay Area way).

When I was in high school back in the 70's...yeah, I know lol! Anyway, we lived in a new housing development in Union City. Was safe back then.

Nice nearby park is Coyote hills Regional Park in Fremont:

Union City, Newark or Fremont would be decent commutes. But, I agree, you might as well live in Union City. It was turning into a bedroom community when we moved there, lots of suburb housing developments. I'm assuming it's still that way, but haven't been back in years.

Just put Union City into Spotcrime.com. Crime seems to be concentrated in one area, so you should be able to find safe neighborhoods easily:
