Hi Guys,

My wife and I are moving to bay area this July. She will go to school at USF and my work is in Sunnyvale. She will need to take public transport as she doesn't drive and I can either drive or take public transport. So what area would you guys suggest would be better for both of us and commute would be bearable. I also want reasonably safe area & reasonably priced.

This is a very similar situation to me. I'm a student who will be moving with my partner in August. I think for this forum to help you better you might need to post your budget for rent. Good luck.

Anywhere on the mid peninsula, say between Burlingame and Redwood City would work. It's mostly all safe middle class suburbia. caltrain.com is the commuter train between San Francisco and San Jose. There is a light rail stop and bus stops in front of the SF Caltrain station. Don't know exactly which one will take you to USF.

I am a resident apt mgr in Santa Clara. I have tenants in the bldg, the guy works in Sunnyvale, and she goes to school at USF. He drives to Sunnyvale, and she takes the Cal Train. This is within walking distance from our bldg, which is next to Santa Clara University. This is a very safe area.

Her commute took her right to USF via public transport. I actually went with her one day when she was trying to decide where to go to school. You take Caltrain to BART then a bus to USF, with all connections not requiring any walking in-between (station to station).

There is a Caltrain station in Sunnyvale, too, but my tenant's work isn't convenient from the station, but maybe yours would be.

You could look in Sunnyvale for a rental near the Caltrain station there, and that would be really convenient. Sunnyvale is also safe.

Santa Clara would be cheaper.

Here's a Craigslist search I did for Sunnyvale with the search term "Caltrain"

SF bay area apts/housing for rent classifieds "caltrain" - craigslist

Here's the same for Santa Clara:

I noticed some of these apts are close to the Lawrence Caltrain station in Santa Clara. So, that's an option, too.

Here's a Santa Clara search for apts that say they're close to the University:

SF bay area apts/housing for rent classifieds "university" - craigslist

Of course, some say they're close, but aren't really within walking distance, so you'd have to google map them.
