Hi, I'm looking for some help. I may be moving to the SF area for a job opportunity. The job would be on Spear Street. I would be wanting to move to the suburbs approximately 30-45 minutes away from this location. I'm looking for a safe neighborhood with a good school district. I would probably be looking for a condo or an apartment to start off with...right now I am mainly looking for safe neighborhoods and will eventually narrow it down based on money. Any suggestions on specific apt. complexes and condos and possible price range within that neighborhood would be great. Thanks.

What price range are you hoping for? There are lots of "cheap" (by our standards) condos in Daly City, San Bruno, South San Francisco, Pacifica, San Mateo, and possibly Burlingame or Foster City. You could also head east, and find something affordable-ish in places like Oakland, Alameda, Hayward, San Leandro, and Concord. Just depends on what your budget is, and also what kind of weather you prefer - since they're all quite different. With the school district requirement in mind, I'd first tell you to look in San Mateo, Burlingame and Foster City, but the latter two might be too expensive.

What is your budget/price range? Do you have school age children now? or are you just planning for the future?

The neighborhoods that gizmo mentions above are great places for townhomes and condos, but the school districts aren't that great. Safe neighborhoods for apartments/condos differ greatly from safe neighborhoods for houses. The best school district in the state is the Acalanes school district in Orinda-Lafayette-Moraga. These communities are 30 to 40 min from downtown San Francisco by BART. 2nd best school district is Cupertino-Saratoga, but the commute to downtown SF may be too long from there.

To be fair, I did say that San Mateo, Burlingame & Foster City were the better school districts - and they are quite good! Cupertino-Saratoga is a very nice community, but I agree the commute would be long. However, you can take highway 280, which at least has fairly light traffic... I'd estimate an hour (possibly a tad more) during regular commuting times.

price range means a lot around here...so does willingness to compromise.
