Although there aren't many variables that seem to free the pilot from making a bad judgment call, we really don't know if something else happened yet.
I think it will be much longer than that; pretty sure I've read somewhere that it will take at least 1+ Years for the final.

There will be exhaustive discussion here: Asiana flight crash at San Francisco - PPRuNe Forums At least some of the commenters are active or retired commercial pilots.

What strikes me here is the go-around call was made much too late. Is this pilot error? Perhaps. But what brought this plane to an unsafe speed on approach? This is a big question. And I think this is where the investigation goes now. Why were they going so slow? Were they fatigued? Was there someone asleep at the wheel? There were no ATC warnings. Quite a mystery.

It seems to me that this airlines executives have a pretty good picture of what happened now.
They first acknowledged that there is no mechanical problem with this plane.
Now they are releasing more information:
CNN--
Flight 214 pilot was in training for 777
NEW: Pilot in the captain's seat had 43 hours of flying the 777, South Korea says
NEW: South Korea identifies the pilot sitting in the captain's seat

Man, how much would it suck having to sit in a tiny chair through a long, boring 10.5 hour flight, then crash land and have to fight your way out of a burning plane. After watching that video it's pretty damn amazing how many people were able to just walk away from it.

It is truly amazing how many just walked away from it. Do some of us have more guardian angel protection or better karma or just blind luck? Who really knows...

Incomprehensible. There are too many telltales of low airspeed to go unnoticed.
Experienced or not for that particular model, a pilot knows (damned well should know!) what the minimum airspeed to maintain is for any plane he or she flies.

I totally agree. During my years as a FA I would always ask the pilots questions. Many times on long flights I would sit in the cockpit (and yes it is fascinating to sit up there and see what they do and to look out of the tiny windows) and ask what would happen if this or that were to occur? I had hundreds of scenarios that I would ask them and it all boiled down to plane mechanics and pilot competence.

I can just imagine how each one of those pilots feel right now. I would hate to be in their shoes. The entire situation is sad for all who are suffering from it.

Even if the rookie was in the captain's seat, there is no excuse. The captain, (assuming he was in the co-pilot seat) should have taken control. Apparently he did not. No excuse here from the flight deck.
