I currently live in NYC so I don't know what neighborhoods are good in San Fran or a 30 year old professional who would use public transportation to get around. I've done some research and it seems like SOMA and Cole Valley would fit the bill but apartments are scarce on Craigslist and those that are available are around $2K per month.

I would be happy in a small studio or 1br.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Just FYI, Soma and Cole Valley are wayyyy different types of neighborhoods but both are desirable places to rent.

I don't know specifically how much but I would expect the majority of listings would be >2,000 a month. In regards to Cole Valley, if you like that area you should also check out the Haight and Lower Haight. They are all pretty much the same neighborhood imo.

If you want to pay less than $2K, you'll have to branch out. The Mission District is slightly more affordable, and has young professionals. Otherwise, you'll have to look more in the family-oriented neighborhoods like the Sunset and Richmond. In any of those neighborhoods, you should be able to find something for around $1500, but check the listings.

A 1 bedroom in San Francisco averages about $2800 a month. It's about $1000 less out in the suburbs.

What the "average" is doesn't mean anything as far as the reality of the search goes. OP, it depends on what you call "suitable for a young professional". Scope out some of the rentals out around GG Park and toward the beach. Some of those in-law cribs are cool, if you're down with proximity to the park of beach. If you're driving, the commute to downtown isn't bad. If you want to be around more nightlife action, then you'll have to pay more. If you're looking for affordability, you can score a good place in the areas mentioned for $1500-$1700. Don't let some of the negativity on this thread distract you from finding a spot in your price-range. Price depends on your priorities.
