From my research, most of the low income housing in SF County and the surrounding counties in the SF Bay Area are designated for seniors and low income family housing. I'd be curious to know how long the waiting lists are. Somehow the restaurants are hiring help, and I doubt the employees are commuting from Timbuktu.

I agree.

(I had to correct myself on the Dothraki quote, the quote is "it is known.")

Since we have gonvernment mandate minimum wage, why stop here?
We should have gonvernment mandate;
Maximum rent price
Maximum house price
Maximum gas price
Maximum car price
Maximum plane ticket price
Maximum egg price
Maximum milk price
Maximum games ticket price
Maximum concert ticket price
Maximum iphone price
...

You only need about 5 minimum wage jobs to afford a 2 bedroom place in SF.
There is no right to live in a particular location. if you can't afford to live in a place, move. That might sound harsh but since when did all these wants and desires become rights? They are not.

If you want to live in SF and know it is very expensive, then get a better job. But that means doing something many would rather not, recognize and deal with a deficiency in yourself instead of making everyone else give you something. That means getting more education, learning new skills, striving to be better and make more money by creating value in yourself someone is willing to pay for.

All this living wage nonsense is called inflation. Thats right, inflation. The government will inflate your value to others by forcing them to pay you more than you are worth. You are worth what people are willing to pay for. If you pass out hamburgers suddenly that is worth a living wage? Why, because you chose to do that job instead of going out and getting something better?

There is always something better. You create better, not sit around waiting for someone to give you something.

You want to live in SF? Well, earn the money to live there or get the heck out and live somewhere else. You don't have a right to live in SF or any other specific place. All you have is the right to live but the condition in which you live are your responsibility, no one elses.

People are getting tired of all the whiners and complainers wanting something for nothing. If you aren't earning enough it is because you haven't figured out how to create value in yourself or get others to see the value you provide. Forcing people to pay you a better wage is not the same as providing a value that earns better pay. Living wages are handouts.

So maybe you grew in SF or someplace else. So what? Work like everyone else does and pay for your lifestyle. If you can't manage to do that, get out and live somewhere else. Find a place with a lower cost of living.

You want the nice weather and all that? Work for it but stop complaining that you can't afford it. The sun shines everywhere but you want it most of the time, you want the ocean, the hills to stroll through and the coffee shops to sit at. Well, that takes money and making money takes effort, more than complaining and demanding some living wage. Stop being a leech on society and start contributing. Make yourself worth of investment instead of sitting there as a liability.

There aren't enough working people to coddle and take care of those who want but do nothing or little for it.

All the education you need and the opportunities to learn the skills to be successful are free in this country. All you need to figure out is how to pay for food and a place to live and even that is provided. Too bad if your chosen career doesn't land you a great paying job, choose another but stop thinking everyone else owes you something.

I don't think minimum wage and living wage are one and the same. But things are quite a bit out of whack when you need to make $100k to afford an apartment in SF and in a 30 mike radius.

san francisco is a city of the haves and have nothings.
one segment buying $2-3 +million dollar houses in places like noe valley and st frances woods ,dropping $300-400 on dinner at gary danko, michael minna or 5a5 steak lounge regularly
then you have another segment families living a low income lifestyle if they make less than $70,000

While SF has its share of extremes, it's not at the top of inequality in the country. For instance, it's not among top 10 counties with the highest gini coefficient

East Carroll Parish/Louisiana - 0.645
Edwards County/Texas - 0.626
New York County/New York - 0.601
Mineral County/Colorado - 0.598
Pitkin County/Colorado - 0.591
Allendale County/South Carolina - 0.582
Greene County/Georgia - 0.564
Randolph County/Georgia - 0.558
Sioux County/North Dakota - 0.556
Franklin County/Mississippi - 0.555

According to another source, SF county is ranked 94th among all US counties by gini coefficient.

Going even more macro ... once you get out to that 70 mile point (or so) the unemployment and other basic economic factors all head in the wrong direction really fast. 100 miles out its as if you are no longer in the same state (and in a way, that's true). It's like the Grapes Of Wrath.
