Does anyone know how long the commute by BART would be from North Berkeley /Hills to the financial district? Do we need a car or is public transportation good on weekends as well?

^about 25-30 minutes from North Berkeley BART, then add in the walk to the station. Public transportation is generally good throughout Berkeley, due to its density (whereas Oakland is more hit-and-miss depending on the neighborhood).

If you can find something in Orinda that would be an excellent situation as far as BART and schools.

I am not familiar with Orinda. Where is it in relations to Berkeley? I checked out the BART, it looks like a 30 mins ride, not bad. How much is the average 2-bed rent? I didn't see any listing on Craig list. Thanks for the help.

Oridna is east of Berkley and is a wonderful area. But, you are right. I looked on padmapper and zillow, and there's nothing in your price range.

Orinda is lovely and very upscale. As I recall, though, traffic is awful getting to the highway, and hence, to the BART station. I haven't been there in years, buy my old brain cells are remembering a two-lane road with a speed limit of about 25mph through town with lots of traffic.

Was just there on Monday. Not so bad. 3 lanes and one is exclusive for the BART traffic. But doesn't matter because there doesn't seem to be a place in the OP's budget.

If you live in near Orinda, chances are, you'll need a car to get to the BART station itself. You see, that mountain makes all the difference in terms of population density and public transit options.

Meanwhile, if you lived near Rockridge or somewhere in North Berkeley, you'll likely be able to get all your shopping done via walking as well as be in the financial district in a quick/easy 25-min BART ride.

I personally lived in North Berkeley for three years when I was a student at UC Berkeley. I had a 2bd/1ba for $1650/mo that was located two blocks from an elementary school, six blocks away from two BART stations (right between Downtown Berkeley and North Berkeley), four blocks from a grocery store, and four blocks from a park. It was great.
