Am I right in thinking that Verizon does not supply, or have the desire to supply FIOS, in the bay area?

It does not appear to be available:

Verizon FiOS® | 877-714-9668 | FiOS.Verizon.com

Your choices are AT&T U Verse and Comcast.

Couple of factors may be influencing this: lots of competition in the Bay Area market already and the capital costs to build out a FTTH/FTTN network to accommodate FIOS will be expensive. Someone at Verizon probably already did the ROI calculations.

I think the main thing is simply that Verizon was not the default landline phone company in this area. AT&T is. As far as I can tell Verizon is building FIOS on top of their already existing landline network.

If you're looking for FIOS-like speeds, some big apartment complexes or condos may have Paxio or Webpass, which will give you a 100mbit connection.

In certain parts of Santa Rosa, Sonic.net fiber is also available.

Verizon is the default land-line carrier in Los Gatos and Morgan Hill, but I checked my parents' MH address and FIOS is not available there.

Thanks for the responses. I only need a 50 mbps connection. Something the AT&T does seem to offer.

And, while Comcast seems to offer that, I have concerns about that claim based on their technology.

Comcast and the other MSO's offer "Cable Modem" internet. While it can reach speeds of 50 mbps and higher, under optimal conditions, once the network gets congested (eg - peak usage hours), it is highly unlikely that they can achieve those data rates. But, the main factor will be how well the infrastructure is designed in your service area.

We have like 100Mbps and get around 90-100Mbps. Haven't had issues.
