Ok, hey everyone! I'm Kai, I've been to America twice now and my band has decided that after we finish school we would like to move to America to help get new supporters, new culture and a new experience. We are both 17 year olds turning 18 mid next year. Basically we want to know everything there is to know, in particular how about getting by, where is cheap, decent community and where we would fit in with our music ( we play surfy grunge). One of the places I visited last year was San Francisco, amazing city, just that we aren't the richest kids going around.

Any tips, recommendations, advice to share would be a great help and much appreciated!

Sincerely, Kai

You can't move to the US without a work visa, which you can't get without having needed skills and an employer sponsor, sorry.

Make it big in Australia and then you can buy a visa.

Or you can make like Neil Young and be an illegal immigrant. As long as you can pay the rent you could probably get away with it, millions of Mexicans do every day.

If your parents are paying, sure.

San Francisco fails utterly on at least one of those counts (or all 3 depending on whom you ask).

If you become famous and successful where you are, you might qualify for O-1B visas:

O-1 Visa: Individuals with Extraordinary Ability or Achievement | USCIS

Quote:
Extraordinary ability in the field of arts means distinction. Distinction means a high level of achievement in the field of the arts evidenced by a degree of skill and recognition substantially above that ordinarily encountered to the extent that a person described as prominent is renowned, leading, or well-known in the field of arts.
Good luck!

I'm envisioning any of a select number of sidewalks on Pacific Ave. in Santa Cruz, or the Haight.

Wait, are we including work and housing here?

Why not make it a reality show based on the premise of Flight of the Conchords?

It would probably be easier to come over for community college and do music on the side?

So what were you planning to do, get a tourist visa, then overstay your visa? The gov't follows up on those a lot more than they used to. The suggestion to get a student visa and study here while making music on the side was a good one. The only problem is you'd owe out-of-state tuition, which you probably wouldn't be able to afford. Nor would you be able to afford to live in SF, not to mention the rest of the Bay Area. How were you planning to pay for everything?

Perhaps they have a TARDIS and they can travel back to 1975 when their plan was still feasible.
