Honestly compared to SF and Berkeley I was never really wowed by the food in Oakland, a lot of places are rather stuck in the past imo, but I'm sure that's changing. There's some great places though. These are the places I used to go to, note that I haven't lived in Oakland for about a year and a half so some may not be there no mo'.

Sabuy Sabuy in Rockridge: good stick to your ribs Thai food.

Christopher's Burger in Rockridge: good burger place.

Zachary's: duh

Battambang in downtown Oakland: amazing Cambodian food.

The Trappist: best bar in the world imo.

Market Hall: great place for cold cuts, not so much for anything else.

Chop Bar is my fave. Think American with a Cali twist.

I like Homeroom, since I am too lazy to make Mac and cheese and I live alone.

I've enjoyed the brunch at flora and the cocktails. I didn't like dinner as much but it was probably my fault as I had an amazing dinner the night before I went to flora so it paled in comparison. :P

I am on my phone, please forgive the typos.

Chop Bar used to be so much better They oversalt the food and the service is pretty mediocre, since all the waitstaff think they're hanging out at a bar, as opposed to actually working in a bar. Pretty sad, because I used to be a regular and I live so close. [/hipster].

I used to go a lot more. But now everyone else goes too! My last couple times have been as good as I remember. But I seem to get the same old school waiters so I have been getting good service!

I went to Soi4 at the weekend:

Cali Thai Food | Best Thai Restaurant in Oakland, CA | Soi4

It's on College / Rockridge.
Best food I've had in two years of living in Oakland. I'm vegetarian so a good vegetarian selection is a major plus for me. Delicious. Clean, nice atmosphere.

From now on it will be my go-to place to take guests.

Am I the only person that does not rate Zachary's?

I know this is an unpopular view these days but when I go to a restaurant I want to sit at a clean table, with space to move my elbows, not squashed like a sardine next to a dirty wall and I want some element of customer service. Sorry if that sounds snobby but I just don't get it. To me that's not a fun night out. It's easier, cheaper and more pleasant to order a pizza at home.
To me going to a restaurant is more than just about the food and actually I don't think the food is all that amazing at Zachary's either.

I like Soi4. Very good! And it is right next to Bittersweet! Definitely a favorite. I also really like Hawker Fare. Yummy, and not too expensive (for high quality ingredients).

Cosecha is also very good, if you are in the mood for upscale mexican!

No you're not, I think Zacharay's is HIGHLY overrated. I always give places a try twice and both times I was underwhelmed by their Pizza. I think it's just cool now to say I love Zachary's it gives people some sort of I'm a real Oaklander credibility. That deep dish swimming in sauce is not appealing. I tried the thing crust too. Amici's is better. Yes Amici's.

Zach's is OK. I have been meaning to try the new Little Star, but I haven't gotten around to it.

My current Oakland favorites are:

Battambang (Cambodian). Banh Cuon Tay Ho (Vietnamese), Kamdesh (Afghan), Golden Lotus (Vegan/Vietnamese- their 'meat' dishes are incredible), El Gusano (awesome Happy Hour), FuseBox (Korean fusion), Shan Dong (Chinese- homemade noodles are fantastic), Rolling Dunes (Crepes), Mua (great bar and food), Fat Lady (Brunch), and Ike's (Sandwiches). For special occasions Haven and Bellanico are pretty fantastic. Tara's Organic is my favorite place to get ice cream.
