Hi guys -

I was wondering if there are any folks that are living/have lived in Half Moon Bay and Pacifica that can help me out!

My mother is relocating to the Bay Area to be closer to us, but she is coming from a very gray, foggy city where she has lived for the last 30 years, and she hates the sun (she has a sun allergy)! She has visited and likes both spots (HMB and Pacifica), but would like to know which one of the two is generally the most overcast/gets the least amount of sun. Temperature does not matter (which is colder or warmer or windier), but she is really just interested in which one of these spots gets the LEAST sun on a yearly basis, so she can have her beloved clouds !

I live in the Bay Area but not in either of those two areas (too foggy for me!, and have not lived here long enough to know which one of those spots is the grayest. If there is anyone that can tell me which one best meets her criteria, or if either HMB or Pacifica has a specific neighborhood that does or does get lots of fog/clouds, it would be much appreciated!

Thanks for you help, everyone !

Both cities have foggy and not-so-foggy areas. I don't think there's a significant difference between them as a whole.

Both are fairly similar. The closer she moves toward the coastline in either town, the better for the fog.

It sounds like Daly City is what youre looking for, the closer to the ocean the better. If it has to be Pacifica the then further north you stay in town, the foggier it will be. Definetely avoid the southern districts of Pacifica because Pedro Point will block alot of that fog and it can be much sunnier down there.

Yep. Last weekend I rode through Pacifica to HMB; on the north end of the Tom Lantos tunnel it was sunny, but on the other end it was completely socked in. And then of course there was solid stop-and-go traffic for several miles into HMB and again on 92 -- which is an argument against living there IMHO, unless of course you never have to go anywhere north or east.

I live in Pacifica and drive down to Half Moon Bay to go to the farmer's market on the weekend. It is almost always foggier there.

Montara is a great spot for fog as well. The Pillar point section of HMB is less foggy than HMB proper as well.

Take it from someone who has lived in both areas. The north end of Pacifica, southwest end of Daly City area is FAR more foggy than HMB will ever hope to be. She will be right at home there, trust me.
