A few things to point out here. First, the definition of "near BART" varies, but the OP specifically stated a preference for "walking distance" which is about 1 mile for most people, and there are very few houses, period, within 1 mile of Fremont BART. Mostly what you'll find for rent in that area are multifamily housing. I know, I've had my eye on renting a house in Fremont and the ones that come up are usually 2-3 miles or further from BART. Second, the price of a 3-bedroom is not a good indicator for the price of a 1-bedroom. For whatever reason, 1-bedrooms are not much cheaper than higher bedroom apts in Fremont. For example, in my own complex 1-beds go for $2000 and 2-beds go for $2200-2300. I've seen the same pattern in other complexes. I'm not sure why Fremont is like that.

From my experience $1800-1900 sounds about right for a 1-bed "near" (walking distance) BART.

OP, if you want to pay $1400 and be within walking distance to BART, your best bets are to look for apartments near the Hayward, San Leandro, Coliseum and Fruitvale BART stations.

I'd never recommend getting a place near the San Leandro, Coliseum or Fruitvale stations, especially if walking to BART. Safety is worth paying more, and those stations are all in sketchy to terrible areas.

Walking to San Leandro BART is sketchy? This is news to me. Are you sure you aren't talking about Bayfair BART, which is also in San Leandro?

Walking to Fruitvale BART at night is not recommended. Walking to Coliseum BART is never recommended, and rental rates in that neighborhood are way south of $1400...and for a reason!

Yes, sketchy. I stand by what I said, having spent plenty of time in the area over the years. It's nothing like the Coliseum station area, but yes, it's sketchy.

I crossed once (it was already getting dark) from the Amtrak station to Colliseum BART and it was very unpleasant.

Interesting.

For a couple years i lived near the San Leandro Bart station(near thrasher park)and never had a problem walking to and from Bart. Very rarely you will encounter a person asking for change (inside the Bart entrance), or see a few loud kids hanging out in front of Bart waiting for the bus. But as far as feeling threatened in any way, i never had that feeling.

The vicinity around Bay Fair Bart is considered somewhat sketchy but even that reputation(IMO) is overrated. I have a aunt that lives near there and she usually takes Bart into the city for work. Shes been doing it for years and never had a problem

Now Coliseum and Fruitvale...forget about it.
