Hi everyone!
So i'm from san bernardino CA, it sucks down here (I know). Currently a college student going into Marketing (or PR). About to be 21 ha. Trying to move to san fran. I will have 10k or more by july 2014. Found apts. for 600 including utilities already. Won't carry anything with me except general things such as clothes as well as my brothers bike as my car ha. I have done a lot of research about this place. Bums, Public transportation , weather etc. Will have no job going there. I have restaurant and retail experience. Anything I'm missing? Any advice to a kid moving on his on for the first time? Never lived a big city. Also, how hard is it to find a job such as a restaurant or coffee one?
Thanks in advance

Could be a miserable existence. But you're young, it will build character. Just make sure you're working towards long term career goals.

Expect to have a few roommates. If you've found furnished studios for 600$ then something's REALLY wrong. That's not possible. Expect to pay 1600+

I don't think you'll have any problems finding retail or restaurant work.

I'm assuming $600/month with roomies, correct?
If not, it's a scam because there is no private apartment for $600 in SF.

My GF attends SFSU and rents a shared room for around $500/month. It's a 2/2 with 4 roomies plus my GF, so total of 5 people all paying around $500/month.

When it comes to entry level retail/food positions, it's really up to you. I know Abercrombie really needs employees, so if you are decent looking and have an outgoing personality, you should have no problem getting a job there, which pays almost $11/hour. A lot of retail stores are hiring, you just need to have an outgoing personality and clean look. There are a lot of cafe style places that are constantly looking for cashiers. If you have serving experience, you should have no problem getting hired as a server too.

If you are fine with having lots of roomies and leaving your car in SoCal, then go for it! You only live once. I wish more young Americans would experience life more. In Australia, its very common for recent high school graduates to backpack across Asia, Europe, Central America or South America for multiple months just living out of hostels and a backpack. While, this isn't the same thing, it's still good you want to experience something new. Do it now while you are young and have no family to worry about.

Agree with BMW! Between the retail jobs and the server jobs, I'd go for the server jobs because of tips. You should make quite a bit more money doing a job where you get tips. Another job to think about is a valet parking job for the same reason. I used to work at a casino, and the valet guys made bank - way more than the cashiers, etc.
