I myself from former USSR, my native language is Russian and I lived in Russian Brooklyn 6 month (and it was not very pleasant experience), I visited Russian Miami (Sunny Isles) and occasionally met Soviets in the Bay Area; and unless these Soviets were working in the Silicon Valley or studied in Stanford or Berkeley the encounters were not very interesting. However, those who do work in hi-tech or study in top universities they are usually not in "the community" anyway. I would prefer not to live in predominantly Russian-speaking community when possible.

. Does it seem realistic to rent decent 2-bedroom apartment in either of these towns for, say, $2300? I check rent.com and craigslist, there are properties in this price category, however i cannot judge whether they are good or just some cheapest and trashiest? this really depends on many factors but $2300 seems reasonable for a decent 2 bedroom place in the east bay. I know that in Castro Valley you can get a 3 bedroom for around that price in a good neighborhood
2. How can we determine to which school the particular apartment complex/house belongs to? Can't find any resource on web showing connection of property address and school. most school websites will have this info with the street name and which school would be their home school that is in their neighborhood. Some schools are overcrowded though and occasionally the students have to go to another school in the district
3. Do i understand correct that each property address is linked to particuar elementary school? yes
4. School year starts in September, right? When we should enrollment process to desired school the latest? Isn't spring time (April-May) too late? [/b]school year starts in late August. Enrollment for Kindergarten usually starts in March so I would look at enrolling around March/April [/b]
5. My son is not english-speaking at the moment? Should i search for some, don't know, school supporting foreign students in learning language? HOw the schooling process is organized for such kids? i don't know much about this
6. I guess that classes in elementary schoool last from 8-9 am till 12-13 pm, right? what kids usually do after classes (if not going home right after)? Are there some after class daycare programs at schools? Is it payable or free of charge in public schools? most schools start around 8-8:30 and end around 2:30-3. It depends on the school. Usually there is one day a week where they have early dismissal at 12-1:40 (depends on the school). The majority of schools have a afterschool program run by outside agencies such as ymca, adventure time, kids care, kids country, etc (there are a lot of them). They are located on the site of the school. It does cost money to go to afterschool programs.the cost varies a lot. Some programs have sliding fees for lower income and some have monthly rates and hourly rates. I know for my sons afterschool care, I pay $7.40 an hour. The prices have a big range depending on what program and where you are.
