Just like way back when I heard someone up North say, "that was Hellacool", that lingo again, different, and we're only 500 miles away - give or take.
Well, it's not actually "the city" - it's "The City" - not that anyone could tell the difference when you're SAYING it...

When I moved to SF in 1985 the first thing my uncle in SJ told me was don't EVER call it Frisco or you'll be run out of town. I never heard anyone that lived there call it that, but maybe that's changed in the last few years. It used to indicate you were a tourist.

Same with putting "the" in front of the freeway/highway number. People I met while in college would always ask if I was from Southern California after I gave them directions somewhere. For some reason they were very irritated when I would say take the 80 to the 580 to the 24 instead of take 80 to 580 to 24. Quite a few people took the time to "correct" me and others on it and now I hear it up here all the time.

I can see that...putting "the" in front is quintessential SoCal for me. Except I don't remember hearing much of that up in NorCal, but maybe things have changed.

You know what I'm getting from this whole thread? Wow, people are rude! It's very impolite to correct people. (which makes it kind of funny to correct people that correct people!)

In reality, these words or phrases are colloquialisms -- it's what makes us individuals, and gives others clues to where we are from. They aren't incorrect, they are simply not colloquial to here.

I was thrilled when a friend asked me after one of our first conversations when I had gotten here from Pittsburgh PA. And we both laughed about my "Pennsylvania Dutch" heritage, which has me saying even weirder things than Pittsburgh-ese.

A few people corrected me too, what does it matter - they get the idea. A few people I met up North when I lived there were, rather, um, rude, and picky shall I say.

Okay... obviously we've had different experiences! I'm 31, and none of my Black & Latino friends say Frisco, but to each his own.

LOL. Truth is, I've rarely heard people correct anyone to their faces! They might giggle, or possibly ask if the person is from out-of-town... but you don't often hear anyone being chastised over it. Oh, and I don't put "the" in front of freeway names, so that must be a regional thing.
