Of course, New Yorkers also call their city "the city." And if you ask a non-Californian they'll probably say NYC is "the city."

That's really only valid for NYC boroughs and immediate area surrounding NYC. I can't imagine it would work in Albany or Buffalo, NY for instance.

But in Brooklyn, "Do you want to go to the city" always implies manhattan.

I don't think anyone ever said "no one" ever says Frisco......I also don't think comparing what a gangsta type uses is relevant. They're notorious for making up their own words - most of the time butchering the English language.

Have you ever met me in person?? No, so how do you know if I "kick it" or not? I'm about the most NON stereotypical librarian you'll ever meet, LOL... I'm covered in tattoos, and my adopted brother & last 3 boyfriends were Black. Not to mention, I actually live in the Hunter's Point district - so I've probably seen more "gangsta" types than you have. Anyway, the bottom line is that we can't make any generalizations here... some yuppies say Frisco, just as many non-yuppies do not. Okay?

Gizmo you rock, and i really do mean that with 100% honesty. First off that black guy with gold teeth in "FILMOE" as he put it, probably represents black america in SF better than any liberal indie documentary could portray.

Second, okay a 'gangsta'. Do you think they are not relevant in today's society? Hell if you live in Hunters Point ( Im not calling you a liar...... i just have a hard time getting a mental picture of a jewish lady *librarian none the less* living in the point, much less walking through the point) than you know these people can be pretty damn relevant in todays society.

Thrid, im not trying to start a beef even though thats what trolls feed on, im just noting its not bad to say frisco. And that typically yuppies and transplants seem to be the only ones who have a problem with the term. The black man with gold teeth right on filmore (im going to assume hes a local for life) simply served as further proof.
