How is Berkeley? Crime rate? Much different than Alameda?

I think the crime rate looks low in Berkeley, but with a campus there, I don't know if I would believe their numbers. I could be wrong, but I remember when I was in college, they did everything in their power to "disappear" crime -- so as to make parents happy they were sending their precious children into the arms of safety.

I personally knew three girls on my campus (Penn State) that had been attacked and raped; police were called, reports were taken and it was pushed under the carpet...

Ahhh, Berkeley. It's a place that people tend to either love or hate and you can't really judge it based on crime stats, school test scores, etc. I don't know about the crime stats but I'd guess they are higher in both petty and violent crime. Alameda is a quiet, yet close-in, and diverse suburb where they roll the streets up at 6PM, whereas Berkeley has much more of an urban feel and is the cultural center of the East Bay due to the University. The two towns couldn't be more different.

According to Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed Berkeley crime rate is very, very high.

"With a crime rate of 67 per one thousand residents, Berkeley has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes - from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 15. Within California, more than 98% of the communities have a lower crime rate than Berkeley."

We have traveled a great deal in the past six years and visited Berkeley half a dozen times. It seems rundown and seedy to me. I heard someone refer to Berkeley as an expensive ghetto. We've decided against settling in Berkeley.

Berkeley is my home town and I do love it. However as stated, you either love it or hate it. The crime rate there is either greatly down played as Tallysmom said or exaggerated a good deal. Berkeley's biggest issue is probably it's drug problem and kinda always has been. While you may not get shot as eaily as other cities with high crime rates, burglaries are often quite prevalent and the break ins can at times, be rather brazen. Criminals in Berkeley, like the non criminals throughout the Berkeley-Oakland area can be rather nonchalant.
