alright...i really need some advice. i am planning to relocate to the west coast next month and am having some serious difficulties in deciding where to move: San Diego or San Francisco. It seems a bit like comparing, shall I say, apples to oranges? Anyway, I have a graduate degree and work in the human rights nonprofit sector. I love SF Bay and I must say I love SoCal for the beautiful beaches (I do love to surf!)...my question:

where do you think the opportunities are for the human rights nonprofit sector? SD? SF?

do you think san diego is slowing becoming a bit more progressive than it has been in the past?

any thoughts would be great!

San Francisco is certainly more progressive, but you might find more human rights work in San Diego. But it would probably have something to do with illegal immigration.

If you are just a casual surfer, SD will be better. It takes more balls to surf in San Francisco.

in San Francisco you will be poor. in San Deigo you will live a modest life but be ok.
you will like the people better in San Francisco.(if you come to san francisco, be prepared to put some flowers in your hair)
been in both cities for over 30 years.
strange facts of San Francisco---
1. friendships are deeper and are for life.
2. people stay in their same blue funk. i mean 30 years later same people same place same building same thing frozen in time
3. a man in a gorilla suit will get in the elevator and none of the passengers will blink
overall - my uncle in mississippi says livin in California is like livin with a beautiful woman
that has a headache all the time.
