I don't doubt that you like SF. My reaction was more toward the quickness that you went to "snobby, provincial..." generalizations. If that was the impression I gave, I guess I didn't communicate clearly either.

Shall we call it a wash and leave it at that?
Definitely. Somehow wires got crossed and neither of us was really addressing the other. It happens.

The Redskins "fight for old DC" in a stadium not in DC, but in a state the team shares with the Ravens.

your point?
That's a pretty poor comparison, though. The Meadowlands are six miles from Manhattan. It's about as far from Times Square as Candlestick is from the Embarcadero. The new Niners stadium is a long way from SF; it's more like when the NY Giants were playing in Connecticut for a few years back in the 70's, before the Meadowlands were built.

And the Redskins and Cowboys also play a lot closer to DC and Dallas than the Niners will play to SF.

Candlestick was never close. It was a major pain in the ass to get there and nobody liked it. It took me well over an hour on the Muni shuttle to get there from Russian Hill. That's not much different than the trip on CalTrain to Santa Clara. At least with the new stadium, it will be comfortable once fans arrive.

The thing is, football is an "event". People show up hours before and stay hours after. There are only eight dates per year to attend in the NFL, after all. Proximity isn't as big of a deal.

In Houston, I went to about one game per season. In two years in SF, I have gone to one game. I think my attendance will remain fairly constant in the new configuration. SF and the Niners will be fine.

CalTrain runs from SF to the new stadium. I'm thinking "rail-gating" will become popular on Sundays for people who, for some reason or another, want to watch NFL games in person. The rest of us won't notice the difference.

Most of the fan base of the 49ers aren't in the City of San Francisco proper - it's more suburban, has been for years. The 49ers would have probably moved to a suburban stadium years ago (from old Kezar, back in the 1960s and early 1970s) instead of Candlestick if it wasn't for Lou Spadia, the team president of the time, promised the Morabito family (who founded the team in 1946) that he would keep the team in San Francisco. The team is only an SF team in name only, and has been for years; their offices and practice facility were in Redwood City from the 1950s prior to moving to Santa Clara in 1988.

The nearest CalTrain station is nowhere near the 49ers stadium. It is, however, accessible by VTA light rail; you could ride CalTrain to downtown Mountain View and transfer to the light rail line there.

Nevertheless, Monday night games are a real concern for local transportation planners, given that the West Coast games start at 6 pm, which will coincide with the commute time - I think the City of Santa Clara has requested the NFL not schedule any MNF games for at least the 1st year of operation such that they can get a good read on traffic flows in the area.

A resident will find more affordable housing and larger housing, it's pretty clear to me why some people prefer it over SF, but a tourist.... surprising.
In August I hosted a couple from Austria... they really did like SF but equally liked Oakland.

They loved Lake Merritt, Rockridge, Piedmont Ave and hiking Redwood Park... one day they went kayaking in the estuary.

They had never heard of Oakland before their visit.

Who knew Oakland was so cool? There really IS a "there" there!
