Hubby is military being stationed in San Bruno. Our housing options are mountain view or dublin. Seems like both commutes are terrible. His working hours will be 6-3:30 ish. Which would be a better drive? Also is there much quality difference between Caltrain and bart? His work will pay for either. We have two middl schoolers, so schools matter, but they seem to be of similar quality. Any insights at all would be great! Thanks.

I'd choose Mountain View given money is not a factor (housing in Mountain View is much more expensive). The commute on CalTrain (37 min) from Mountain View will be about half as long as BART from Dublin (1hr 19 min) - he will need to transfer once on BART. Also if he ever needs to drive, Mountain View is closer. Both cities are nice so that part is a personal preference.

MV for sure, closer to many attractions in the Bay Area and cooler weather than Dublin. Dublin is nice, but a bit of a commute from most of the attractions. If that's your desire, I would pick Dublin, or Pleasanton which is the next city.

What attractions, may I ask? We don't really go for touristy things. Hubby works 60+ hours a week and daughters train five days a week for gymnastics, so not much time for that sort of thing. Also, how hot it hot? We have lived in TX, so I am not sure the frame of reference. Thanks!

Either way it doesn't matter, because commuting from Dublin to San Bruno is not something one does by choice. It's only 34 miles, but it would probably take your hubby 90 minutes each way.

Both are nice areas. I MUCH prefer riding Caltrain to BART. Caltrain is pleasant, where BART is something to tolerate, IMO. The BART trains are noisy with a screechy noise that drives me nuts - like metal on metal. People on the forums always give me a hard time for saying this, but that's my take. That screeching gives me a headache. But, the Caltrain ride is really pleasant and comfortable.

The Caltrain trains don't run as often, I've heard. I had never ridden on Caltrain prior to moving to Santa Clara (about 10 years ago), and I didn't commute, just took it for fun to SF. It's much, much nicer than BART.

Other than that, Mountain View will be cooler, but Dublin is not horribly hot. Dublin is more of a sprawling suburb, a bit away from the bay. Mountain View is right on the water, which is nice.

Really, either town would be pleasant to live in. The only issue is probably commuting, and unless the Caltrain schedule is too limited compared to BART, I'd go with the Caltrain commute. Plus, I'd love being close to the water.

Mountain View, by far. Closer to everything, cooler weather, more scenic.

And here is the nth vote for Mtn. View. Not even a competition once the commute is factored in.
