You're probably right, but I don't know because I haven't traveled outside of the Bay Area in years.

It's not that hard to imagine. It was that way till recently and it was very nice IMO. And it wasn't like a ton of people were moving here just because it was cheaper. People are moving now I assume for jobs and maybe because the area has been changing and maybe now attracts a broader grouper of people who maybe wouldn't have considered moving here before.

i lived in a beautiful and fully updated 2 bedroom at 18th & sanchez from 2001-2003. if i recall correctly my rent was $2400/month. i'm betting that place would go for 30-50% more today, no? so, imagine what SF was like 11 years ago.

The thing is, you have to look at the whole picture. What were the salaries 11 years ago?

I remember when gas went up to the outrageous price of 33 cents per gallon, around 1972 or so, during the gas shortage crisis. I had a job at the time at minimum wage, (high school) which was $1.65/hour.

You can't just say, wow, rents were so cheap 11 years ago, and now they're terrible.

What's the average salary for a tech worker in SF now? You see, it's all relative.

How would comparing rental prices between 11 years ago & today along with salaries of tech workers of today be a fair comparison? Was ComingBackToCali a tech worker back then & now?

A fair comparison would be average rental prices & salaries of 11 years ago to today's, but I doubt the majority of people living in SF back then were tech workers.

You make an excellent point.

However, none of our conjectures about then and now have any bearing on the current situation. It just is what it is, isn't it?

Wouldn't that mean that we would have to continue the sprawling tactics of the last couple decades? or be a lot more built up, and California would look more like Tokyo, Singapore or Sao Paulo...though none of those places have cheap rents despite them being so built up.

And another bingo.

I'm guessing it would be comparable to philly.

I second Tulemutt's "bingo" and add an "amen."
