I have a family member that lives in Almedia County. She is 64 years old with no income and job. I was wondering what social services are available to her? I have never known her to have a full time job so she get if anything very little social security. She has always worked for herself as a tutor or home health aid getting paid cash under the table.

We as her family has all offered help and advice but she refuses to take or listen to us. We found out yesterday she has five weeks to pay her rent or else she will be evicted. She is cutting off her cell phone, internet, and landline service at the end of the month. Therefore there is no way we will be able to contact her. I live in NYC and know that their are agencies that will pay your back rent for a one-time deal here. Is there something similar to that in Oakland?

She refuses to get a minimum wage job because she believes it is beneath her as she has a masters degree in education (though I have never actual seen her teach in 30 years except being a substitute teacher for a few years). We as a family want to help her get back on her feet but are also worried that if we give her money we are only enabling the situation.

On top of all of this I believe she is mentally unstable but not mentally ill enough to be considered incompetent. She refuses any type of drugs or therapy to help her. I believe she is either bipolar or has a personality disorder. When ever she has gone to a therapist she quits the moment the therapists says something she does not like. In her opinion everyone else is to blame for her problems.

Thanks in advance for any advice. I can't guarantee she will listen to any of us but all we can do is try.

Sounds like she is making a decision for herself, why not let her? You might not agree with it, but it is not your place to decide for her.

I am not trying to decide or make her decisions. I just want to find out what type of resources there are for her and as a family we can present them to her. If she chooses to not accept the help or make the effort to find out more about the programs once they are presented to her there is nothing I can do after that.
